Dr Matthew R. Keynes is a non-Indigenous historian at the University of Melbourne. His research investigates the ways that education contributes to justice, peace, and social transformation by repairing historical injustices and legacies of violence.
Currently, Matthew is a McKenzie Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Faculty of Education. His publications include the monograph Education and Historical Justice: Redress, Reparations and Reconciliation in the Classroom (Bloomsbury 2025, co-written with James Miles) and the edited volume Historical Justice and History Education (Palgrave 2021, co-edited with Daniel Lindmark, Henrik Åström-Elmersjö and Björn Norlin) as well as multiple articles and chapters in a range of significant outlets.
Before arriving at the University of Melbourne, Matt was Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia (2021-22). His PhD was awarded by the University of Technology Sydney in 2022. Matt has held numerous Visiting Fellowships including the Humanities Research Centre/Australian Studies Institute Fellow in Australian Studies at the Australian National University in 2024, and Visiting Fellow at Umeå University, Sweden (2018-19; 2024; 2025) and Aalborg University, Denmark (2019; 2022).
Matt is an active member of the scholarly community and serves on numerous boards and committees including the International Standing Conference for the History of Education, Australia New Zealand History of Education Society, and previously, History Australia and History of Education Review. Prior to his academic career, Matt worked for the History Teachers’ Association of Victoria.
